On Being a Lady.

Living in the modern age where femininity is no longer cherished and a true lady is hard to find it was refreshing to come across the following blog post by Phylicia Duran. Written in a convicting style, this article is a good reminder to all of us what being a lady is all about. . .

How to Become a Lady

Phylicia Denton

She walked - or maybe swaggered into the room, one hand in her pocket, the other holding the strap of her purse. Her dark-wash jeans were just a little tight and cut a crisp line across the toe of her stiletto, hovering just above the ground behind the heel.

Her shirt, a clingy jersey-knit, accentuated her culturally- chic look. She was standing next to a bar stool and talking to an acquaintance, guffawing in overt delight at her partner's humor. She waved her hands wildly in the air as she talked, tilting dangerously in the stilettos. Her voice, harshly low and loud, echoed across the restaurant. She turned to me at the hostess station and I looked into two heavily lined eyes.

" So will I get a table today?" she snapped.

I showed her to a table and returned to my post to be greeted by a well-dressed man. He peered into the dining room and asked, "Did a lady just come in here?" Before I could answer he spotted his female companion and joined her across the room. Perhaps it was a good thing he didn't give me a chance to answer is question, because I would have said "no."

The days of ladies and gentlemen seem to be long gone when I meet women like that - and I meet them everywhere. That is our culture: an entire society of people who believe "being themselves" gives credence to whatever action they choose to take. But it's not only the world that misses the mark of grace and poise; many of us, dear Christian girls, miss it too!

It's a hard world in which to learn to be a lady. Truthfully, those who seek it are few and far between. Being a "lady" is a cultural term passed down from the days of English lords and nobles. Today it means that woman has class: not in the sense of her family's income, but that she acts on a level that supersedes her financial status. It's not her wallet that makes her classy, it's her character.

A few years ago I received the book How to Be a Lady: A Contemporary Guide to Common Courtesy as a gift. A little hot - pink handbook is all it was, but the quippy lines inside were amazingly consistent with the heart of Biblical womanhood. I still keep the book on my desk and reference it before I go out. It holds tips on everything from setting a table to dressing for a wedding to manners at the office. According to the book, being a lady has a lot to it:
  • A lady always respects other people's time, whether at the office or at home
  • A lady returns any item she borrows in a timely manner
  • A lady never points out the imperfections of her mate to others
  • A lady turns off her cell phone at an event or a dinner out
  • A lady uses her turn signals when driving
  • A lady does not wear revealing clothing
  • A lady does not wear linen before Easter nor after Labor Day

This is mostly common sense and common courtesy. Basic manners are essential not only to be respected and taken seriously, but for the purpose of our testimony. We not only represent ourselves and our familes, but also Jesus Christ. Some Christian girls believe learning to be a lady is a waste of time. To the contrary, it is one of the best investments of time that you will ever make! Whether or not you wear linen after Labor Day, the essence of being a lady is an others- oriented mindset. A lady is both regimented and flexible; compassionate and strong. A lady reaches out to others by disciplining herself.

It's not just manners and a classy appearance that matters. If anything a lady is known more by how she carries herself physically and socially than by anything else. Good physical carriage, such as good posture, makes any woman look more together and healthy than the one who slouches. A woman should know how to walk well, whether in heels or flats, sit decently, and should learn the power of a simple smile.

Social carriage refers to the words we say, how we say them, the people we associate with, and the art of common courtesy. If we honk at cars while driving, gossip, or are loud and impatient we have lost the beauty of feminine grace and poise.

Let's look at an example of what a lady is not. In the book for novelists, Writer's Guide to Character Traits, is listed a description of " The Flamboyant," a personality authors can use to describe a character in their novels. Look at how she is described:

  • Dramatic, easily upset and emotionally unstable
  • Indirect and devious
  • Naive and simplistic
  • Not a clear thinker
  • Attention seeker: appears phony
  • Seems flaky and flighty
  • Competitive with other women
  • Exhibitionistic, dramatic in social situations
  • Vain, promiscuous and jealous
  • Manipulative

That does not sound like Biblical womanhood to me. Does this description ring any bells? Read Proverbs 5. The adulteress is "The Flamboyant!" A lady is the polar opposite of the Proverbs 5 woman; in fact , a lady is the Proverbs 31 woman. All good comes from God (James 1:17); therefore, all good traits of character, manners, and social activity must be based on His design.

Cultural ladylikeness is founded on deference of others above all else, which brings out good manners and social behavior. A lady is graceful because she is first gracious; she has poise because she is patient. Being a lady proceeds from being a woman after God's own heart. God is a God of order (1 Cor. 14:33) and he blesses those who pursue it in their own lives. Ladies make a priority of orderliness because they know discipline and organizati0n will always benefit in the long run.

So here's our challengs ladies (and I believe you are!) : let's discipline ourselves to be classy women in every area: physically, socially, mentally, and spiritually. And when we need to be reminded how to be a lady, just remember that class is timeless, chic is fleeting, and a woman that fears the Lord is to be praised! (Prov. 31:30)

reflection.

Wow. 2010 is passing by way too fast. So much has happened already this year, and the time has literally flown.
I'll be 22 next month, and that in and of itself, seems unreal. I still feel like a high school kid in some ways. *cheesy grin*
God has been so good to me. I have had a wonderful life and have had the privilege of knowing some of the most amazing people. :)
It's good for me sometimes to sit back and reflect on what has transpired in the past few weeks, months, and even years. To see how far that the Lord has allowed me to come. . . and to see where I need to let Him have His way more. . .
To remember the lessons learned, the victories won, the hardships that have been overcome. . . and to look ahead to the future and place it in His Almighty hand. . .
That's so hard for me to do sometimes. . . I tend to be logical and want to figure everything out on my own, but I hear that still small voice calling "Let me be your guide." He wants me to trust Him, and Him alone with my future.
One of the hardest things for me to do is place my life in His hands, but that is also one of the most important, for without doing so, I will never move foward. . .
" For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart." Jeremiah 29:11&13 ♥

Believe. . .

I believe -. . that just because two people argue, it doesn't mean they don't love each other. And just because they don't argue, it doesn't mean they do.

I believe -. . that we don't have to change friends if we understand that friends change.

I believe -. . that no matter how good a friend is, they're going to hurt you every once in a while and you must forgive them for that.

I believe -. . that true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance. Same goes for true love.

I believe -. . that you can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life.

I believe -. . that it's taking me a long time to become the person I want to be.

I believe -. . that you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them.

I believe -. . that you can keep going long after you think you can't.

I believe -. . that we are responsible for what we do, no matter how we feel.

I believe -. . that either you control your attitude or it controls you.

I believe -. . That heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.

I believe -. . that money is a lousy way of keeping score.

I believe -. . that my best friend and I can do anything or nothing and have the best time.

I believe -. . that sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you're down, will be the ones to help you get back up.

I believe -. . that sometimes when I'm angry I have the right to be angry, but that doesn't give me the right to be cruel.

I believe -. . that maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you've had and what you've learned from them and less to do
with how many birthdays you've celebrated.

I believe -. . . that it isn't always enough to be forgiven by others. Sometimes you have to learn to forgive yourself.

I believe -. . that no matter how bad your heart is broken the world doesn't stop for your grief.

I believe -. . that our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become.

I believe -. . that you shouldn't be so eager to find out a secret. It could change your life forever.

I believe -. . two people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally different.

I believe -. . that your life can be changed in a matter of hours by people who don't even know you.

I believe -. . that even when you think you have no more to give, when a friend cries out to you - you will find the strength to help.

I believe -. . that credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being.

I believe . . .

21 things. . . about me!

Blogs are a reflection of the writer. . . thus being said, here are 21 things (since I am 21) you may. . . or may not, know about me!

1. I love the Lord with all my heart. I strive every day to put Him first in my life. Even though I have failed Him over and over again, He has never, ever, failed me. The Lord is still working on me, every day I am learning life lessons and how to be more useful in His service. I am so thankful that He chooses to use us and works in our lives. Without His gentle guidance I do not know where I would be, I am truly blessed beyond measure.

2. Sometimes I wish it was still 1952. I love old movies, shows like I Love Lucy, The Andy Griffeth Show, and Donna Reed. This time in American history, before the rebellion that ensued in the 1960's and 70's, was a simple time, a time where families still had morals, supper around the table was commonplace, and the world was a semi-decent place in which to live. Oh! to go back to the glory days.

3. I love classic styles like that of Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy, and Princess Diana. Love pearls, cardigan sweaters, leopard print, and long coats. My favorite "style words" are graceful, classy, modest, feminine, and vintage.

4. I have dreamed up baby names for as long as I can remember. I just get a thrill out of putting them together. . . My favorite boy name, as of right now, is Elliot James, and for a girl, I'm in love with Felicity Grace, but I have many, many years before I will have to worry about that . . .

5. On my bucket list, close to the top, it reads. . . "Go to London."

I love, love, love, all things English. Top spots to visit?

1. Hampton Court Palace - former home of Henry VIII

2. Buckingham Palace

3. Tower of London

4. Hever Castle - former home of Anne Boleyn

5. Eastnor Castle - because it is breathtakingly beautiful

6. Westminister Abbey

7. Kensington Palace - former home of Princess Diana

6. Some people have described me as kind of. . . well. . . a nerd. I'm into piano, history, cooking, photography, writing. . . guess I'll let you decide. . .

7. I love summertime. To me, it's the most wonderful time of the year. Picnics, swimming, flip flops, bright colors, camp, heat, no school, my birthday. . . that's all right up my alley making this time of the year my absolute favorite. . . I live for those wonderful, warm summer months.

8. I really do enjoy blogging. I'm not just saying that. It is an outlet for me, but it is much more than stress relief, it is a reflection of who I am, where I want to go, and who I will become.

9. This is not really normal for a 21 year old. . .but I am a morning person. My brain works better in the early hours of the day, before I have been bogged down by the stresses of life. This is after a 20 oz. bottle of Diet Dr. Pepper, however. *huge cheesy grin* In my perfect world, everyone would get up at 5:30 and retire at 9:30.

10. I am amazed by the internet, although I am not proud of this in the least, I can waste an entire day in front of the computer screen. Facebook, Twitter, blogs, shopping. . . it's really pitiful.

11. I love to plan, set goals, and do my best to follow through. As corny as this may sound, I enjoy self-help books, from proven authors, of course. Currently obsessing over books on organization and finance. Two major things that many of us struggle with and can work on. Someone once said, you stay the same, except for the books you read, and the people you meet. This is so true. My pastor also mentioned that you can read a book in approximately 3 hours and learn something that it took the author possibly 40 years to learn.

12. My birthday is June 21st, and I would not have it any other way, it's the first day of summer, and 6 months away from Christmas, so I get a major holiday every 6 months out of the year! *wink, wink*

13. I am addicted to Diet Dr. Pepper. . . yeah. . . . it's really bad.

14. Spending time with my friends and those I love makes me terribly happy. Laughing till it literally hurts is the best. . . making memories and being there for each other. . . you all know who you are, so here's a shout out to the special people that God has blessed me with. . Love to you all.

15. It is a very special thing to me when God moves in my life. So thankful that He does. When He reveals something new that I have never seen before, or He teaches me a life lesson, even though sometimes that can be hard, I am forever grateful.

16. So about food, my favorite is Italian, love pizzas and pastas, though anybody that has known me for any length of time is probably reading this and saying WHAT???

I hated pizza and pasta for most of my life, but, over the past two years or so, my eating habits have drastically changed. It's like I've discovered a whole new food group not yet known to man!
Other than Italian I enjoy Mexican, Oriental, and love me some classic American cuisine such as a cheeseburger and fries. . .

17. I have played piano for all of my remembering life, mostly. . . It's my love. *grins*

18. As far as music goes, I only listen to Christian, some of my faves include. . . Gold City, The Collingsworth Family (Kim Collingsworth is my role model, the most amazing pianist, seriously!),
Greater Vision, Kari Jobe. . . .

19. Perfume. . . Viva La Juicy, Ralph Lauren Romance, and Vera Wang Princess. Oh yes! Oh, and I adore PINK body splash in Fresh and clean. *cheesy grin*

20. Ice cream is my favorite dessert. . . . Mint Chocolate Chip. . . the best is from Marble Slab!

21. For some strange reason, I love doing stuff like this! haha so are you still awake? How about 21 things about you?

What is your life?

Life is so short. . . and all that really matters in the end is what we did for the Lord, and for others, as I said in a previous post. . .

I recently received an email about a lady who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. . .she gave a list of things that she would do if she had her life to live over. . . maybe we can learn from her words. . .

IF I HAD MY LIFE TO LIVE OVER….

I would have talked less and listened more.

I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage.

I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained or the sofa faded.

I would have eaten the popcorn in the ‘good’ living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace.

I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth.

I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.

I would have sat on the lawn with my grass stains.

I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn’t show soil or was guaranteed to last a lifetime.

But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute, look at it and really see it…live it and never give it back."

Makes you stop and think. . . doesn't it? What memories am I leaving behind? The Bible clearly says that our lives here on earth are nothing but a vapor that appears for a time, and then vanishes away.

Make it count.

Legacy

Today. . . I had the privilege of playing for the going home service of a man in our community. . . He was a good man, one that loved the Lord with all of his heart, and his family. . .

As I listened to the family share memories of his life, in which the Lord had given him almost 90 years to serve, the one thing that kept being repeated over and over again was that this man was an incredible prayer warrior. . .

He would list every member of his family, church, workplace, and each one of his friends and pray for nearly two hours a day. . . two hours. . . .

He truly strived to serve the Lord, and those around him, he wanted to leave a legacy to his posterity that was coming behind. . . . He wanted to be a light to those around him. . .

There. . . I realized that it is not about what we drive, what we wear, or anything that seems so important in our physical life, not that anything is necessarily wrong with any of those things, as long as we understand that it is really and truly about our relationship with Jesus Christ. . . .
It's about who we really are, and what we are leaving behind, what they will remember about us. . . . .

It's about our legacy, the path that we leave, the light that we shine. . . it's all about others. . .

"Others, Lord yes others, let this my motto be:
Lord, let me live for others, that I may live for Thee."
